Blog 10: Video Vortex

Constructive Instability by Thomas Elsaesser:

Argues that the advance of technology results in the decline of innovation art although youtube seems to find a middle ground between the epiphany of new entertainment entropy.

The Practice of Everyday (Media) Life by Lev Manovich:

Argues that youtube, and other similar sites like facebook and myspace, have contributed to the progression of culture to a more socially oriented one.

Both of these articles regard youtube as a culturally relevant site, however take different approaches to how it contributes to culture. Elsaesser takes a more negative stance on it, referencing how it causes the decline of art. He does also mention the way in which it allows one to trace through culture by just clicking links on pages, which he seems to regard in a positive light. Manovich however mostly relates youtube's cultural magnanimity to the progression of the public sphere and how the internet makes this easier.
