Blog 10 Wk 8 Video Vortex

Lev Manovich said in his essay “THE PRACTICE OF EVERYDAY (MEDIA) LIFE” that although the majority of the top viewed sites and much of youtube come from producers who make up only a small percentage of the population, the little people are what make the experience great. Sean Cubitt agrees but also disagrees by saying that with the rise of individual producers youtube and the internet has become muddled, coming out of HiDef and into a pixilated madness made up of cellphone videos of cats and such. Cubitt admits that this phenomenon is good in a different way, that it allows people to control the media and mold it how they want. However, he does not like that art, masterpieces, meant to be seen close, personally, cannot be seen the way they are meant to. Youtube’s choices of colors and format do not do justice to the way videos should be seen. Manovich points out that the rate at which sites like Youtube or Flickr are growing that there is just no possible way to make it how Cubitt wants it. Cubitt thinks that true art now is found within the pixilated chaos of the internet; that one must take what is there, edit it, transform it ,and make it art.
