One of the theorists that we have discussed in lecture is Noam Chomsky, who argued about the influence of media that shape the views of society. By controlling the events, scenes, and language presents the main focus of bias opinions and ideas that limits the knowledge of the other aspects of current activities. This may also connect to another theorist, Jean Kilborne's argument on how media and advertisements affect society today. Media shapes the public's ideology of perfection everyday. Through advertisements, commercials, television, newspapers and etc., society is bound to a variety of opinions that may destroy a person's confidence if they do not possess the product the ad is advertising. One would say that they are not affected by the media because they "block it out" or they "don't watch television", yet they might wear a brand from Holister or American Eagle which can show that they follow a certain trend. Kilborne's examples of media show that everyday we are exposed and unconsciously absorb the influence. In her "Killing Us Softly" video, we are faced with ads that degrade the general public: mainly women. Womens' bodies are simply are "not good enough" to the public eye if they do not have "big boobs, a skinny waist, and a round butt" yet men are only targeted for their abs?
These two theorists argue about influences of media and how it affects our ideas and actions in everyday life. If we are to find more information by ourselves, will it prevent such ignorance and create an understanding of our current surroundings, not just the news, but about ourselves?
