Blog 9b Critical Concepts Dictionary

Hey, how's it going, guys? Week 6 is here, and midterms are rearing their ugly heads. So, let's sharpen the critical thinking battle ax, and mount another fresh trophy on our wall of college achievements.

I was not very sure how long this particular submission was supposed to be, given that its a brief definition of one theorist's critique of media, so I can only hope this will be sufficient for all of you. Happy hunting.

Noam Chomsky

Government manufactures public consent through the use of Propaganda.

In democratic societies, the freedom of expression allows people have a voice, and to have their voice be heard. However, when too little restraint is placed upon the so-called civil liberties of the people, there is a tendency for many individuals to become anarchic, because they believe that social etiquette and government regulations do not apply to them. Government must then use propaganda as a means to covertly control what the general public thinks, by using thoughtful messages and the manipulation of images. Propaganda is successful, because the average person would rather believe that the system is working in their best interest, instead of taking an active role in the process.

  1. Your idea of propaganda is only partially true. You make it seem as if the only purpose of propaganda is to sedate the masses, but rather it can be used as a call to action as well. (ie war bonds etc)
