Blog #4 Visiting Artists

The author is describing entertainment media as a self-replicating, formulaic system which perpetuates entertainment without substance, without true artistic merit, all the while with the permissible consent of the audience. He critiques both the apathy of the consumer in participation of this revolving cycle of entertainment produced, and also criticizes entertainment performers for providing, exalting in favor the 'artist' whose work is experimental by nature and facilitates change. I think it's problematic to assume that 'entertainment media' is inherently less than art work that intentionally provokes thought. It depends on the intent. I think the author means to say that entertainment media masquerading as thought provoking art is problematic, but not that media purely for entertainment is exactly wrong. I think it's obvious now that the media has been formulaic for so long. We're beginning to use the media autonomously to expose the fact that there hasn't been thought provoking media in a while, but at the same time, 'entertainment media' will never completely go away just because it does have a purpose to fill.
